Envisioning India’s NDCs: Milestones for India’s Net-Zero Pathway
WRI India is organizing an invite-only workshop titled “Envisioning India’s NDCs: Milestones for India’s Net Zero Pathway.” This second workshop in the series builds on the learnings, policy levers, and insights from the first. It builds on analyses of the structures, institutions, and sectoral interdependencies influencing India’s climate commitments, as well as the systemic barriers, feedback loops, and leverage points critical to aligning the 2025 NDC update with the LT-LEDS.
The first workshop, “Envisioning India’s NDC 2025: Strengthening Structures and Systems for Net Zero,” brought together researchers, sectoral experts, and practitioners to collectively use systems mapping to co-develop narratives for net-zero pathways and identify policy levers across key sectors — Energy and Industry, Adaptation and Resilience, Buildings and Urban Systems, and AFOLU — that support India’s long-term decarbonization goals.
Through these collaborative discussions, participants generated valuable insights on potential NDC target types (e.g. generation-based, target for green cover for urban areas, etc.) and levers across the four key sectors, revealing opportunities for more ambitious and integrated climate action.
This second workshop will build on these outcomes to develop long-term scenarios for India using two system-dynamics models: the Energy Policy Simulator (EPS-India) and the Green Economy Model (GEM-India).
It will explore long-term decarbonization scenarios and translate them into sectoral milestones to guide India’s progress toward its LT-LEDS goals. By bringing together stakeholders from government, research organizations, civil society, and academia, the workshop aims to:
• Co-create long-term decarbonization scenarios for India using EPS and GEM through feasible, incremental implementation of policy levers and sectoral targets.
• Draw on these co-created scenarios to define sectoral milestones that could inform the framing of India’s future NDC updates.
