Ashwini Chitnis
Program Head, Clean Energy Supply
Ashwini Chitnis is the Head - Clean Energy Supply with the Energy Program at WRI India. She focuses on developing and expanding the organization’s work on transmission, energy markets, energy planning, and utility economics.
Ashwini has been working on energy-sector policy and regulation since 2008. Her work covers many areas, including electricity access, generation capacity addition and planning, power purchase agreement (PPA) analysis, tariff and performance of regulated utilities, and governance. She is an active intervener in the electricity policy and regulatory processes at both state and national levels. She loves to collaborate with civil society organizations and other stakeholders on policy and regulatory issues and finds these interactions educative and enriching.
Focusing on the urgent issue of a just energy transition, her latest work analyzes whether and how different ownership options impact operational efficiency and financial health of electricity distribution companies. She is also involved in various efforts aimed at strengthening long-term resource planning for a renewable energy-rich future.
Ashwini holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (2002) and a master’s in economics (2012) from Savitribai Phule Pune University.
In her spare time, she likes to cook, read or listen to audio books, or go for long walks or cycle rides.
