Dr. Prakash Doraiswamy
Program Director – Air Quality
Dr. Prakash Doraiswamy is the Director of Air Quality Science at WRI India. In his current role, he leads the technical strategy supporting Indian cities in their efforts to manage air quality. This includes estimation of sector-specific emissions, air quality data analysis and modeling, design of mitigation measures and pilot trials, and evaluating the efficacy of measures. He also served as the science lead for the Clean Air Catalyst Indore Pilot until the project concluded in early 2025.
With over 22 years of experience, Dr. Doraiswamy brings deep expertise in both air quality measurements and modeling. His work bridges the gap between science and policy by translating complex research into actionable insights. His research spans particulate and gaseous measurements, mobile source emissions inventories, source apportionment, quality assurance, and diagnostic data analysis. He has worked closely with stakeholders across India, Southeast Asia, and the United States.
Before joining WRI India in July 2023, he spent nearly two decades in the U.S. with RTI International, SUNY Albany, Desert Research Institute, and the University of Tennessee. He led several major projects funded by NASA, the U.S. Department of State, and the Health Effects Institute, focusing on low-cost sensors, satellite data, and capacity building for air quality management. He also led air quality monitoring and capacity building initiatives across North India and Southeast Asia and oversaw development of tools such as a pilot air pollution benefits assessment model for India.
Dr. Doraiswamy is actively involved with the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA). He is the Chair of the A&WMA Publications Committee and member of the Journal's Editorial Review Board, and the Editorial Advisory Committee for EM: A&WMA’s Magazine for Environmental Managers. He holds a Ph.D. in air quality from the University of Tennessee (USA), an M.S. in environmental engineering from Tennessee Technological University (USA), and a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from ACTECH, Anna University, Chennai (India).
